Ramabai understood that educating women would improve their social status and encouraged them to pursue professions such as nursing. She had to contend with an orthodox social environment to persuade young girls and widows to take up nursing as a profession. Initially, Sevasadan was intended for widows and divorcees.

She has done a lot of social activities for the uplift of women and also the co-founder and President of 'Seva Sadan Society' in Pune, a successful institution for women. Her autobiography - Amachya Ayushyatil Athavani was written in Marathi.
