Ramabai understood that educating women would improve their social status and encouraged them to pursue professions such as nursing. She had to contend with an orthodox social environment to persuade young girls and widows to take up nursing as a profession. Initially, Sevasadan was intended for widows and divorcees.
She has done a lot of social activities for the uplift of women and also the co-founder and President of 'Seva Sadan Society' in Pune, a successful institution for women. Her autobiography - Amachya Ayushyatil Athavani was written in Marathi.

She was born in Kurlekar family in Maharashtra in In , she was married to Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade at the age of Though he faced opposition from his family itself, he dedicated his time to make her literate and socially stable. Mahadev too was against untouchability, child marriage and Sati and worked in association with Sarvajanik Sabha and several social programs.
Ramabai made her first public appearance at Nasik High School and very soon mastered the art of speech in English and Marathi languages. Her speeches were always simple and heart-touching.

Father: Madhavrao Kurlekar. Husband: Mahadev Govind Ranade. After the death of Mahadev Ranade's wife, her father was trying to remarry her. When Madhavrao, Yamuna's father, came to know about this, he insisted that he should see his daughter. Govindrao liked the daughter as his daughter-in-law, but Mahadev did not agree to this.
On the one hand, Yamuna was only 10 years old at that time and Mahadev Ranade was 31 years old. Moreover, Mahadev wanted to marry a widow he was a supporter of widow marriage but he bowed to his father's insistence and the marriage of the two was consummated.
After the marriage, Mahadev Ranade decided to educate Ramabai and started teaching her himself. He used to teach her for two hours every night.
