Each time we talk about a new non-fiction text feature we add the coordinating poster to the wall. They are perfect for these biographies or any non-fiction text you use in class. We focus on what each text feature does and how it can help us better understand what we are reading. I also love to use biographies as a great introduction to research for my students.
Once students can identify facts, they are ready to dig into some basic research skills like finding facts and documenting them. This introduction to research and note-taking is at the most basic of levels, but we are laying the foundation for the research projects and college thesis papers of the future. These biography note taking templates are a great way for your elementary students to work on basic note-taking skills.
As students are reading a biography, have them find and write down three facts about the person. They help kids see the world through the eyes of the protagonist and understand the challenges they personally might not have encountered. It encourages them find inspiration and a way to overcome their similar adversities. Nothing can be more inspiring than reading about the life journey of a real hero and learning about the challenges they faced.
Instead of just dwelling on the success of real-life heroes, biographies take their readers through their life ordeals and adversities they faced. Thus, helping children find true inspiration and teaching them valuable life lessons like perseverance, hard work and determination. Learning about real life challenges of people they admire, gives children a positive self-belief and encourages them to persist and be resilient.
These books take their readers on a time travel to another era and culture, thus helping them understand the world from a different view. But that should not get you overzealous with biographies for kids. As much as they have to offer, you should tread with care with biographies. If your child fancies art, choose a biography of a famous artist.
