Scorpion has received critical acclaim since his debut and frequently appears in media outside of the games. Scorpion appeared in the first Mortal Kombat as one of three palette-swapped ninja characters, along with Sub-Zero and Reptile. His early origins were revealed by the series' original chief character designer, John Tobias , in September , when he posted several pages of old pre-production character sketches and notes on Twitter.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero were simply described as "[a] palette swap for 2 ninjas—a hunter and the hunted," while Tobias also considered the concepts of either one of them fleeing their clan or a "revenge story" involving the then-unnamed characters being part of rival clans. Scorpion was given a yellow palette because the developers decided it symbolized fire in contrast to Sub-Zero's ice blue.
Their similar appearance but opposite nature "prompted the story behind them being these opposing ninja-clan-type characters. While his ninja-outfit template from the first generation of games has remained relatively unchanged over time, the improved graphics of the post- Mortal Kombat 4 three-dimensional releases have allowed more details to better differentiate the male ninja characters, and Scorpion's costumes were duly enhanced with objects such as two katana swords strapped to his back and his spear attached to a rope tied to his belt in Deadly Alliance, and a set of ornate shoulder epaulets in Deception, in which his alternate costume was a throwback to the two-dimensional MK titles.
Scorpion's MK costume was inspired by his namesake , such as the character's abdomen-shaped shoulder pads, the two stinger-handled swords crisscrossed on his back, and the exoskeletal pattern on his hard-shell face mask. Scorpion was included with Sub-Zero, Reptile, and Ermac in a bundle of classic costumes from the first Mortal Kombat that was released as downloadable content for the reboot.

While the "Fire Breath" was brought back for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe in , his spear has otherwise served as his primary tool in his fatalities in the three-dimensional games, from impaling his opponents through the head and then decapitating them in Deadly Alliance , using it to yank off their limbs in Deception , and plunging it into their chest before kicking them through a portal that left nothing but a skinned corpse hanging from the spear's chain in MK "Nether Gate".
His second Fatality in the reboot, "Split Decision", had Scorpion using one of his back-mounted swords to hack his opponent to pieces. Scorpion would indirectly play a role in the fabrication of the then-nonexistent character Ermac when Electronic Gaming Monthly published a doctored screenshot of Scorpion from the original game in In Mortal Kombat II , Scorpion is manipulated into believing Bi-Han has returned and joins the titular tournament to kill him once more.
As atonement for killing the former, Scorpion decides to become the latter's guardian. Enraged by this, Scorpion seeks the elemental Blaze 's power to destroy them, but is defeated by Taven amidst the titular Armageddon. While Jubei practices his song, Hanzo's wife discusses Jubei's dreams.
Hanzo agrees that Jubei should have a new dream and will not allow Jubei to join the Shirai Ryu. During dinner, two assassins appear and say that the Shogun has appeared earlier than expected, and Hanzo's presence has been requested by the Grand Master. As Hanzo leaves to get changed, the eyes of the assassins glow blue, signifying their allegiance to the rival Lin Kuei clan.
Hanzo leaves to find the Grand Master, only to find his throne in the middle of the road, with the Grand Master frozen to the throne. Assassins break into Hanzo's home and capture his wife as Jubei hides. He witnesses two assassins kill his mother. He then turns to see his father's spare kunai as an assassin approaches him.
He knocks Hanzo down and attempts to impale him by creating ice spikes from the ground below. Hanzo evades them, just as Bi-Han creates an ice ball that he fires at Hanzo. Hanzo dodges the attack and catches Bi-Han off-guard with his kunai before pulling Bi-Han towards himself and knocking him out. Removing his mask, Hanzo hears Jubei's cries for help from his father as he is pulled into the darkness.

Hanzo immediately runs towards his village, as Bi-Han regains consciousness. Soon, Hanzo arrives at the outskirts of the village and finds the corpse of half a dozen dead villagers. Hanzo is completely submerged in ice and is killed. Shang Tsung approaches Bi-Han, clarifying that the village has been cleared. Scorpion's catchphrases are voiced by Ed Boon, the franchise's co-creator. Scorpion appeared as a yellow palette swap of Sub-Zero. He kept this appearance from the first MK to MK4 after which he bore two swords on his back and his kunai attached to a rope tied to his belt.
He has white eyes with his mask on. Without his mask, his head is a sometimes flaming skull. This Hanzo was orphaned and homeless, being forced to steal to survive. He attacked Smoke, who quickly dealt with him, and saw potential in him. Hanzo was offered a home among the Shirai Ryu clan, and became it's first official initiate.
While full of anger, Hanzo's wrath would be tamed by Kuai Liang and Smoke, being a promising young student. When Takeda stayed with the Shirai Ryu, Hanzo grew close to him, seeing him as an older brother. After the events of Khaos Reigns , Cyrax would be assigned to him as mentor, to teach him control. An alternate version of Hanzo Hashashi features as the main antagonist of Invasions Season 1, having been driven mad by grief and rage that he was unable to find a timeline where he was able to save Harumi.
Scorpion was sent to a timeline where he had died instead of Harumi, and she had become Scorpion. Hanzo and Harumi would join together against evils of Quan Chi and many others in their timeline, giving the Scorpions a happy ending.
